FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sunnyvale, June 15th 2007 *Sunnyvale Hams Prepare for Disaster* When the big one hits, or some other major disaster occurs, how does one communicate when the phones are down, there is no fax machine, the internet is gone, the "trunk line" is jammed, and the cell phone is dead? The hams (amateur radio operators) who are members of the Sunnyvale Amateur Radio Emergency Service (SARES) know how and will be providing emergency communications. The members of SARES, and thousands of other hams across the United States, spend one weekend every June practicing and demonstrating their emergency communications skills. This annual event, known as Field Day, is organized by the American Radio Relay League, a national organization of hams, which was established in 1914. SARES members will be conducting Field Day exercises at Raynor Park in Sunnyvale, 1565 Quail Avenue, June 23 and 24, from 11AM Saturday through Noon Sunday. The public is encouraged to drop by for a visit and take the opportunity to learn about the many exciting facets of amateur radio and emergency communications. Across the country, the Amateur Radio Emergency Service provides emergency communications for the Red Cross, Salvation Army, OEM, FEMA, and hundreds of county and municipal governments and public safety agencies. Many ARES members hold training certificates from the National Emergency Management System (NIMS) under the auspices of FEMA's Emergency Management Institute.
