SARES team:

I will do the usual Silicon Valley time-vs-dollars cop-out.

I'll donate $50 to the effort. Buy the books (or pledge to buy the books) and I'll write a check (or give cash, whatever is best)
to reimburse. Let me know who/when.

Should we donate a subscription to QST? Libraries tend to keep backissues, and this may be an effective way to build a "reading
library" to hold interest. Along these lines, may I suggest WorldRadio? A newsprint rag that is pretty darn good. I'm a
complimentary member because of the BMHA, but I've been giving serious consideration to buying a personal lifetime subscription.

Thoughts, comments, and debate welcome.

Subject: [SARES] fundraiser for library books

Dear fellow Sunnyvale ARES hams,

I recently checked the magazine copies of what the Sunnyvale
Public Library has available for checkout in the ham radio
book category and all ARRL license manuals are way outdated
(from the early 1990s) and not applicable to any of the
current FCC question pools.

I do understand that the city nowadays does not have the money
to replace books that become outdated after a few years. I also
imagine the frustration a prospective new ham would go through
if she/he finds out that the books are not preparing you for the
currently administered exams.

With that I thought I make a request to the ham community: I
am starting a fundraiser where people can donate any amount they
would like to give and I will then order the books and morse code
CDs from the ARRL. I have written to ARRL HQ and asked if we can
qualify to purchase books with the instructor material discount.

I'd like to run this fundraiser through the quarterly ARES meeting
on Wed. September 10th, 2003.

Please let me know what you think of this idea (and if you like
to donate anything to this fundraiser).

73, andreas K6OTT
