That loss is also part of the intermod rejection 'design' :), 
according to page 5 of my VX-150 manual (quote):

"Remember that a large base-station antenna will have considerably
more gain than the supplied rubber flex antenna, and this added gain
may degrade the ability of the VX-150 to resist intermodulation-type
interference.  [...]"

No need for jokes to come from the internet, they are right in the
manual of your radio.
