Hi Ed Fong here.  I will be more than glad to provide you folks with 
antennas.  Yes, they are hard to build.  Check this months QST on my 
portable version.  No, you cannot just remove the antenna from the PVC and 
use it outside.  The velocity factor of air and PVC are different and you 
will not get a match.  I live in Sunnyvale so you contact me or drop by and 
I will be more than glad to help you out.
