Bob ~KG6MOL~ /The assignment of local simplex frequencies goes back a long way, maybe more than 25 years. Walt Reid had formed SPECS in the Sunnyvale thru Palo Alto area and it was thought that a similar group should cover the area to the south and east...thus SVECS was formed. Bill Robinson, W6OMD, now a SK, was one of the first organizers and an early SEC. Bill and a number of other people searched the simplex band of 2 meters to find frequencies that could be used by the cities of Santa Clara County with the least interference to themselves and to other Bay Area communities. The resulting set of frequencies was implemented by all the cities and is in place today. There is no organization that controls the use of the frequencies. It is by the Ham's good nature that they leave the frequencies clear for emergency and net communications; otherwise, the frequencies are available for normal Ham chatter. The latest listing of repeater and simplex frequencies in Santa Clara County was updated on 3/5/2006 by Jim Oberhofer, KN6PE, EC of Cupertino and Jerry Haag, KF6GAC, EC of Mountain View. This list has since again been updated in November 2006 and is found at URL http://www.sec-ares-races.org/freqs/freq-05.htm It seems to me that the system works pretty well.
