All, Below is the latest, and greatest, information about the upcoming Santa Clara County ARES / RACES quarterly drill / exercise. Our District Emergency Coordinator (DEC) Larry Carr attended our March 28th meeting and several SARES members completed the Santa Clara County Disaster Service Worker (DSW) form. The completion of this form will not assure your response outside the City of Sunnyvale. SARES has an established list of those that have passed a background check and have been approved. Those that are interested in becoming a MAC, please feel free to indicate so to me at my e-mail address. Members that would like to participate in the below described exercise MUST advise me via e-mail. I have somethings that must be put in place for your participation, so notification is strongly requested. Bob ~KG6MOL~ EC INFORMATION ABOUT THE APRIL 21 ARES/RACES DRILL The drill will start at 0900. ALL the cities in the county are urged to participate. The drill will be based on a call for mutual aid from one of the cities in the county (called "Santa Mara" for the purposes of this drill). This call for mutual aid will require the response by ALL the Santa Clara County ARES/RACES MACs, as well as all those who would like to become MACs. The drill will be based on a scenario where all the city EOCs are staffed as part of a nationwide Red alert. Therefore, ECs are expected to be monitoring the Santa Clara County ARES/RACES Message net at the start of the exercise at 0900. The announcement requesting mutual aid will be made on the Message Net. ECs should then start contacting their MACs, to obtain a MAC to be released by the city for this drill. NOTE: Each EC should contact his/her city Emergency Manager, or designate to obtain permission to release this MAC. If the EC is able to establish this contact, the EC should advise the Emergency Manager that the drill is in progress, and that hams from the city will be responding as part of the drill. If the EC is not able to make the contact, the EC is to leave a message for the Emergency Manager, and proceed with the drill, releasing the MACs and MACs-to-be as requested by Santa Clara County ARES/RACES. (I strongly urge all ECs to contact their Emergency Managers prior to the drill to arrange for this authorization.) I will need to hear from each city EC prior to the drill, so that I will know which cities are participating - please email me ASAP. The drill will be a RACES training event, and the request for RACES activation will be based on a call for hams to actually report to the assigned location. Therefore, the responding MACs must receive a formal assignment, be given the RACES activation number, and be registered as a DSW in order to participate in the drill. All responders will be covered as DSWs under Santa Clara County RACES activation, so city RACES activation will not be necessary for this drill.
