*Read & _/HEED/_* This was sent to me by a member of the Santa Clara County (California) Fire Department. bg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I normally let the urban legend websites handle this sort of thing, but this one may take people in before it gets publicly debunked. Some slimeball is attempting to cash in on the SoCal wildfires disasters, so spread the word - don't respond to this email. Although the website url given says "www.irs.gov <http://www.irs.gov>", if you check the raw source of the email you can see that it in fact sends you to http://ip-36.net-89-2-128.rev.numericable.fr/~mila/.secure/.online/.application/.forms/california_help.php <http://ip-36.net-89-2-128.rev.numericable.fr/%7Emila/.secure/.online/.application/.forms/california_help.php>, a website in France. Unfortunately, this email may go out to people who are generous but aren't necessarily as technically savvy or suspicious as I am. Hopefully, this email will reach them in time. There are plenty of REAL organizations that will accept contributions, but you should go to their websites directly, and never follow an email link such as this one. Please spread the word. -Arleigh Begin forwarded message: > *From: *Internal Revenue Service<y7d1lhcs@INTERNET. irs.gov > <mailto:y7d1lhcs@INTERNET. irs.gov>> > *Date: *October 29, 2007 5:46:40 PM PDT > *Subject: **Help for California Wildfire Victims* > *Reply-To: *y7d1lhcs@INTERNET. irs.gov <mailto:y7d1lhcs@INTERNET. irs.gov> > > > > > > Hello, this is Julia Brownley. > > As you know this week California has endured a devastating natural > disaster > > Bolstered by a dry spell and heavy Santa Ana winds, fires have spread > through > seven counties in Southern California, destroying more than 650 square > acres, > an area twice the size of New York City. > > More than 2,500 homes have been destroyed or damaged, and there have > been over $1 billion in damages. > At least 22,000 residents have spent some time in emergency shelters, > and tragically, at least eight people have lost their lives. > > Indeed, with more than 1 million evacuees, Southern California has become > the home of the largest peacetime movement of American citizens since > the Civil War. > > All Californians affected by these fires can be assured that the > California Assembly > work with the appropriate agencies to help provide the tools and > resources necessary to both respond and to rebuild. > > *For these Americans, every night brings uncertainty, every day requires > new courage, and in the months to come will bring more than their fair > share of struggles. > In the task of recovery and rebuilding, some of the hardest work is > still ahead, > and it will require the creative skill and generosity of a united > country.* > Right now California is asking you for help ! > If you chose to take part in our program (initiated by IRS & U.S > GOVERNMENT) > click on the link below and make a small contribution. > Together we can rebuild California ! > > BE HUMAN GET INVOLVED !
