Re: [SARES] Phone Tree

I take it that, if I leave a phone message, it should be "SARES Activation - 10/32/2007 @ xx:xx hours - Monitor K6GL/R"?

....and if I make direct contact, including the nature of the activation would be sufficient?

I remember that, after the lost child activation, we all used different protocols.

For my eight contacts, it looks like an activation alert will be via landline as only one has a cell phone listed.

The most recent earthquake was a perfect example of a major event where the only communication method, other than email, was the repeater.

SARES via Andreas is working on a system where a text message will be sent to you e-mail address, text phone, or text pager. The access to activating this alerting system will naturally be controlled, to keep from being spamed. The message format will be something like:

"SARES Activation - 10/32/2007 @ xx:xx hours - Monitor K6GL/R"

When the system is ready we will request that if you want to be alerted in this manner you should provide the contact information.

Another method we can use in the meantime is the K6GL/R. If we have a activation request I will come up on the repeater with a 3 second tone (the "0" button on radio number pad) and announce "This is a SARES Activation, please standby for roll-call & information"....

Dave makes some good points, and I can't help but conclude that the logical response would be a fill-in-the-blanks script for those of us who make phone tree calls. There could be one message format if we make direct contact and another format if we choose to to leave a message.

For those of you who will be doing the calling, please make sure your phone
number is unblocked for caller ID. If you have blocking turned on by
default with PacBell/AT&T, that means dialing *82 before each number to
unblock it. I have a practice of not answering blocked calls or calls
from toll free numbers because they are almost always a Spanish language
telemarketer. During the last call up for a missing person, my cell
number registered a blocked incoming call.

Another thing to remember is to always identify yourself as "a ham radio
operator with SARES" before asking for a person by name. Telemarketers
always ask for a person before identifying themselves.

And if you don't say something within 3 seconds of me saying "hello", I'll
assume the call is from a telemarketing computer dialer and hang up.

Sorry if these measures seem extreme, but it helps keep me sane. And yes,
both my home and cell numbers are on the national "do not call" list. That
stopped about 75% of the junk calls originating in the USA, but many
marketeers ignore it.
