Hello SARES-RG, First of all, congratulations on obtaining control of a functioning repeater in a high-level location. The purpose of this message is to encourage the SARES-RG to think about providing something that isn't already provided by the other repeater owners. What can you do that will differentiate the SARES-RG from the other groups that maintain the hundreds of other mostly unused repeaters in the Bay Area? I found a list of repeaters that lists 3 other repeaters on Crystal Peak, one of which is listed as ARES afiliated. http://www.accesscom.com/~dave6592/scv-rptrs.html 224.020 (-) K6UB/R (Crystal Peak) S.F./Monterey Bay areas [88.5 Hz] 224.640 (-) N6NAC/R (Crystal Peak) S.F./Monterey Bay areas [110.9 Hz] *LINKED* 224.06 & 224.62 444.625 (+) N6NAC/R (Crystal Peak) S.F./Monterey Bay areas [110.9 Hz] A.R.E.S. Does the SARES-RG plan to offer something such as a fire hardened repeater enclosure, total solar power, radio links to other repeaters, etc? Has a switch to D-STAR been considered? The data/voice capablity of D-STAR could also be a valuable asset. If one in the South Bay is linked to the one on Mt Diablo, it could be very useful in an emergency. Like many hams, I have delayed the purchase of a D-STAR radio because of the limited chance to use the radio's full capability. If there were more D-STAR repeaters in strategic locations, I might seriously consider buying one. The SARES-RG has an opportunity to be a leader here. 73 de WB4FZU -- Dave +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SARES members mailing list: <sares-list@INTERNET. sunnyvaleares.org> For help with (un)subscription send e-mail to <majordomo@INTERNET. athm.net>Received on Mon Dec 03 2007 - 06:39:01 GMT
