All,
Several members of SARES have expressed an interest in having a
weekly Packet Net. Well here is a test to see if it is feasible for a
couple of dates in May. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!

Fish -

Thanks for the feedback and advice. I've included an updated notice
with the changes you recommend. Is K6MTV-1 on the air continuously,
or just when someone is at the center to turn it on? (I ask because
I cannot reach it at the moment).

Bob/Andreas - will it be okay for us to use K6SNY-1 @ 144.910 for
this exercise?

Thanks everyone.

SPECS Packet Checkin: May 12, May 19

During two upcoming Mondays in May, we propose having packet capable
stations checkin using packet as part of their SPECS net
participation. The overall goal is twofold: to establish a roster of
those that have packet capabilities and to establish the feasibility of
ongoing testing of that capability that is both more frequent and more
inclusive than countywide quarterly drills.

In a manner analogous to the additional SPECS checkins that are done on
the UHF (440.800) repeater, the participants would send a checkin
message to one of the packet BBS systems mentioned below. We suggest
sending the message between 19:30 and 20:00 local time. Just do one
checkin on one of the listed BBSes. An assistant to the voice net
control will monitor traffic on the BBSes and tally the checkins
prior to close of the SPECS net.

Supported Frequencies and BBSes:
145.070 K6MTV-1, K6LOS-1
144.910 K6SNY-1
223.660 KI6DHU-1

During the May 12 and May 19 test periods, the packets should be
addressed to the Palo Alto ARES/RACES callsign: W6PAX (regardless
of which BBS is used); the sender should be the callsign of the
transmitting station, just as would be supplied when checking in
on the SPECS voice net. It is also recommended that you include
your callsign in the Subject line.

Example:
A station in Palo Alto, KF6UZX, creates a message using Outpost

    From: KF6UZX
    To: W6PAX
Subject: KF6UZX-201: May 12 SPECS checkin

The body of the message is very brief, or empty, to reduce the amount
of airtime, and thus, contention. A numeric value can
follow the sender ID in the Subject line to distinguish messages. Once
the message is ready, KF6UZX connects to the one of the listed BBSes,
and transmits the message. If KF6UZX is unable to connect to
the chosen BBS, then another one is chosen. It is suggested that
at least a couple of attempts be made before giving up on a specific
BBS (since inability to connect could be due to contention, and a
retry then might get through).
